Sfakia Sky Marathon starts on the beach at Loutro, a village no road reaches, after a boat ride from Chora Sfakion. From the sea it climbs the Porolangos gorge into the stone desert of the White Mountains, tops Pachnes, the range's highest summit at 2,453 m, and follows the ridge to Mavros Gourgouthas. It comes home to Anopoli after 44 km and 3,050 m of climbing. Above 2,000 m it is bare limestone, with no shade and no tree.
