Twenty kilometres of the south-west coast of Crete, point to point on stone. From Sougia the course climbs over the headland into ancient Lissos, crosses the knife-edged rock of Lichnou Lakkos and drops to the beaches of Ammoutsaki and Gyaliskari. Then it leaves the E4 for the gorge of Anydroi and the chapel of Profitis Ilias, where you ring the bell, and saves the hardest climb for last: hands on rock up to Vigles, with Paleochora below. About 1,200 m of climbing in four sharp climbs, the crocodile's teeth, and almost nothing you can call a long runnable stretch.
