Patras's mountain race starts at the gate of the Achaia Clauss winery, founded in 1861, and climbs onto the paths of Omplos, the hills above the city. The marathon packs 2,550 m of climbing into 40 km: a 20% wall in the first four kilometres, the villages of Petroto and Krystallovrysi, wild horses below the quarry near 1,000 m, and at km 30 the firebreak, 350 m straight up in a kilometre and a half. The 22K, the 12K and a two-day 60K share the same paths.
