Out of a village square in Boeotia and straight up onto Tilfossio, the rocky northern spur of Helicon. Within two kilometres the 21 km passes the medieval tower of Ypsilantis, with the old bed of Lake Kopais spread out below; then it climbs three times, through green slopes, wildflowers and streams, to 865 m, and drops 650 m in the last five kilometres back to the square. The village carries the name of Dimitrios Ypsilantis, who won the last battle of the War of Independence next door at Petra in 1829.
