Grand Trail Hymettus
Three days of mountain running the week before Christmas, on the eastern side of Hymettus, from the square of Paiania. The 100+ climbs 5,500 m on a mountain that tops out at 1,026 m, up and down the same slopes again and again. Kallias (37 km) and Demosthenes (22 km) are named after two men of this place, and the Antenna Vertical is a first mountain race up to the ridge.

Terrain & tactics
The festival's main race, billed as 100+ km, so the 100 is a floor, not a measurement. The number that tells you what it is, though, is the climbing: 5,500 m on a mountain that tops out at 1,026 m, from a square at 200 m. No single climb on Hymettus is much more than 800 m, so the same slopes and forest roads come again and again. The sun sets a little after 17:00 and rises around 07:40, so a 100 km race spends a long stretch in the dark. No limits, stations or kit list had been published when this was written; plan on a full night with a headlamp and winter clothes on an exposed ridge.
