Euchidios Athlos
In 479 BC, after the battle of Plataea, the runner Euchidas ran to Delphi for pure fire from Apollo's altar and back in a single day, about 1,000 stadia, then died as he handed it over. The race follows his road across Boeotia: over Mount Helicon and the Muses' plateau, past Hosios Loukas and Arachova on Parnassus, to Delphi. The classic 107.5 km runs Plataea to Delphi through the night; the 215 km hyper-athlos runs Delphi to Plataea and back, in 36 hours. Finishers are crowned with laurel and handed Euchidas' torch.
